Dec. 15th, 2009 @ 01:08 am This is all over my friendslist for a reason
LJ is full of fail yet again.

As of the next code push gender will be a mandatory field in order to create a livejournal and the only available options will be "male" and "female". The current third option of "unspecified" is going to disappear. This is a direct contradiction of previous promises made by lj management.

No word yet from lj on how this will effect exiting accounts and whether users who currently have unspecified chosen will be forced to choose or grandfathered in. [ETA: According to this comment it looks like the code may effect the edit profile page as well, and make it necessary to choose a gender in order to make any other profile changes.] Either way it doesn't really matter to me, the effect is the same. Users who do not fit within a strict gender binary are being told that they don't belong, that they need to either choose from a false binary or lie in order to use the site.

The reason for this change is simple: it's better for advertisers. Forcing users to choose a gender provides valuable demographic data to advertisers and allows for better targeted advertising.

I made my decision to cut my ties with lj long ago and this is only the latest in a long line of actions that have confirmed for me that I made the right call. My paid account just ran out and I have no intention of renewing it. I am still crossposting to lj with comments redirected to dreamwidth, and I'm still reading my lj friendslist, but really, I just want to be done with them for once and for all.

I'm tired of not being surprised by each new bullshit tactic lj comes up with to further commodify their users for the benefit of advertisers. I'm tired of watching fandom bitch and complain about each new affront, but still insist on staying on lj because it's where the conversation is, or it's where all their friends are, or because change is hard.

Yeah, change is hard. Being among the first in your friendsgroup/fandom/community to jump ship for a new site is hard and it's scary. Trust me, I know. But livejournal isn't going to stop selling its soul to advertisers any time soon. There's always going to be another invasive ad campaign that circumvents adblock, another stupid corporate decision that restricts or hurts users in order to benefit advertisers, more "sponsors", more broken promises. How much is going to finally be too much, how much are we as a community willing to put up with because it's easier than making a change.

As always, I have plenty of Dreamwidth invites for anyone who wants them.

ETA from [personal profile] synecdochic's post. LJ now says this was a mistake and the code was never intended to go live. I am less than convinced, honestly. In the past I would have taken them at their word, honest mistake and all that, but lj's "honest mistakes" seem to be getting closer and closer together and not all of them seem to get fixed.

So, what site do people use to host their images, other than lj galleries? I forgot that my paid lj account was expiring, and since I have no intention of giving them any more money, I suddenly need to migrate all my images to somewhere else.

pre-lj galleries I used photobucket, but I'm less than impressed with them these days and would love another alternative.

Dec. 11th, 2009 @ 01:40 pm What. The. FUCK.
Dr Peter Watts, Canadian science fiction writer, beaten and arrested at US border
Peter, a Canadian citizen, was on his way back to Canada after helping a friend move house to Nebraska over the weekend. He was stopped at the border crossing at Port Huron, Michigan by U.S. border police for a search of his rental vehicle. When Peter got out of the car and questioned the nature of the search, the gang of border guards subjected him to a beating, restrained him and pepper sprayed him. At the end of it, local police laid a felony charge of assault against a federal officer against Peter.

While I was attempting to articulate my rage, Watts made his own post on the situation, so I'll just let him speak for himself. Not the Best of Possible Worlds:
If you buy into the Many Worlds Intepretation of quantum physics, there must be a parallel universe in which I crossed the US/Canada border without incident last Tuesday. In some other dimension, I was not waved over by a cluster of border guards who swarmed my car like army ants for no apparent reason; or perhaps they did, and I simply kept my eyes downcast and refrained from asking questions.

Along some other timeline, I did not get out of the car to ask what was going on. I did not repeat that question when refused an answer and told to get back into the vehicle. In that other timeline I was not punched in the face, pepper-sprayed, shit-kicked, handcuffed, thrown wet and half-naked into a holding cell for three fucking hours, thrown into an even colder jail cell overnight, arraigned, and charged with assaulting a federal officer, all without access to legal representation (although they did try to get me to waive my Miranda rights. Twice.). Nor was I finally dumped across the border in shirtsleeves: computer seized, flash drive confiscated, even my fucking paper notepad withheld until they could find someone among their number literate enough to distinguish between handwritten notes on story ideas and, I suppose, nefarious terrorist plots. I was not left without my jacket in the face of Ontario’s first winter storm, after all buses and intercity shuttles had shut down for the night.

In some other universe I am warm and content and not looking at spending two years in jail for the crime of having been punched in the face.

But that is not this universe.

I just... I have NOTHING. I keep staring at the screen just going What. The. FUCK. and hoping this will somehow all start to make any kind of sense. I've met Peter a couple times, as a friend of friends, and I seriously cannot comprehend a situation wherein he would actually be or seem to be any kind of physical threat.

Local to Ottawa folks, does anyone have a scale I can borrow briefly? A bathroom-type scale is just fine. I have a large, heavy box I'm mailing to the states and for various reasons, I need to know how much it weighs before I take it in to UPS/Fedex/etc.
